A Journey Through The Centuries
Blair Castle is the ancient seat of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl and holds an important place in Scotland's history. Located just a short drive from Pitlochry, Blair Castle dates back to the13th century and has played a pivotal role in Scotland’s political and military history. Strategically located in the Strath of Garry, whoever held Blair Castle was gatekeeper to the Grampians and the most direct route north to Inverness. From royal visits to pivotal moments in Scottish history, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the striking white façade, rich Jacobite history and beautifully landscaped gardens make it one of Perthshire’s most captivating visitor experiences.
A Highland Treasure
Blair Castle opened its doors to the public in 1936, one of the first great houses in Britain to do so. With a break during wartime, it has continued to do so ever since, and today it welcomes more visitors than any other private house in Scotland.
The castle grounds feature a magnificent nine acre walled garden, recently restored to its original Georgian design, of fruit trees and vegetables, complete with Chinese bridge, gothic folly and a trail of contemporary and 18th Century sculptures. A peaceful wooded grove with some of Britain’s tallest and finest trees sits alongside the ruins of St Brides Kirk, the final resting place of Jacobite leader Bonnie Dundee.
